Taking Care of Your Pup’s Teeth

Posted on

You spend a lot of time taking care or your pet – diet, exercise and happiness are the key to a long and healthy life for your dog – but have your thought about their teeth?

While dogs aren’t as susceptible to cavities and their mouths are said to be much cleaner than our own, dogs can still develop tartar/plaque build-up and gingivitis. These issues, just like in humans, can eventually lead up to more serious infections, including kidney, liver and heart disease.

To improve your dog's teeth, one of the easiest thing you can do is to avoid feeding him leftovers or scraps from the table. Instead, choose treats that will also improve the health of their teeth. We recommend Greenie’s Dental Chews or Pedigree DentaStix. Giving your dog a good bone or chew toy is also a great way to strengthen his teeth and gums.

Cleaning your dog's teeth is important as well. Buy a toothbrush designed especially for dogs to ensure proper tooth care. Brushing their teeth in a circular motion is ideal when removing the tartar on the outside of the teeth. If your dog does not like having his teeth brushed, don’t stress. Take things slow and build up the amount of time you brush until you are able to brush all teeth fully.

To check for signs of oral disease: check for bad breath, excessive drooling, inflamed gums, cysts around or under the tongue, and any loose teeth. When in doubt, it is always best to visit your veterinarian.
